HOTEL OF ETERNAL LIGHT
An investigation into the field of totalitarian regimes during the recent history of Europe. A documentation of the former Stasi prison in East-Berlin Hohenschönhausen under communist dictatorship, symbolizing political persecution and oppression in an ailing state. Inmates at Hohenschönhausen described the prison ironically as the ‘Hotel of Eternal Light’ acknowledging the constant artificial illumination that was designed to suspend time. The focus is upon the sense of light, used perniciously by the GDR Secret Service MfS as a form of control, isolation and psychic demolition. Approaching the subject matter from a distinct representation of aesthetics to contrast its inherent ugliness and malformation, it refers to aesthetics as the theory of qualities of feeling, rather than the theory of beauty.

HOTEL OF ETERNAL LIGHT setzt sich mit dem Freiheitsbegriff auseinander, diskutiert anhand der Bildung von Ideologien und totalitärer Systeme in Europas jüngster Geschichte. Das ehemalige Gefängnis der Staatssicherheit in Berlin Hohenschönhausen, Symbol für Unterdrückung und politische Strafverfolgung unter kommunistischer Diktatur, steht im Fokus der Arbeit. Anhand von Methoden weißer Folter, wurde Licht absichtsvoll schädlich als Kontrollmittel eingesetzt, u.a. zur Aufhebung des Zeitempfindens und zur Destabilisierung der Psyche. Bezugnehmend auf Sigmund Freuds Abhandlung zum Unheimlichen, erfolgt die Annäherung an den Gegenstand über die Repräsentation des Schönen, um sie ihrer innewohnenden Abscheulichkeit gegenüberzustellen.
